In this video, I interview director of Permaculture Artisans and Professional Designer, Damien Luce. We talk about all-things Permaculture and how we can actually immigrate that to bigger sustainability conversations about the planet!

Designing and building a permaculture food forest involves several steps:

1. Site selection and assessment: Choose a site with suitable soil, water, and sunlight conditions. Assess the topography, climate, and existing vegetation to determine the best design for your food forest.
2. Design: Use permaculture design principles, such as stacking functions, integrating elements, and using diverse species, to create a self-sustaining and diverse food forest.
3. Preparing the site: Clear the area of unwanted vegetation and prepare the soil. Consider using sheet mulching or no-till methods to preserve soil structure and fertility.
4. Planting: Choose a variety of edible and useful plants that are well-suited to your local conditions and will create a diverse and interdependent ecosystem. Plant the taller trees first, followed by shrubs and smaller plants.
5. Maintenance: Regularly monitor and maintain the food forest by removing invasive species, pruning and thinning as necessary, and mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
6. Harvesting: As the food forest matures, you can begin to harvest the fruits, nuts, and other crops it produces. Be sure to practice sustainable harvesting methods to maintain the health of the ecosystem.
7. Evaluate and adjust: Continuously evaluate the success of your food forest and make adjustments as needed. This may involve adding or removing species, adjusting the placement of plants, or making changes to your maintenance practices.
