In this video demo, I’ll share an incredibly simple abstract art technique that I find both relaxing and creatively fulfilling. We’re making this abstract art using nothing more than some torn newspaper, a bit of newsprint, and charcoal. This simple technique is perfect for those who want to master the basics while still producing striking mixed media art.

I start by using gel medium to glue down layers of torn newspaper and newsprint across two pages in my sketchbook. This process is almost meditative for me, and it’s an excellent way to create a unique texture that sets the stage for our simple abstract art. Once everything is dry, I pick up my charcoal and begin to create engaging abstract spiral shapes over the newspaper collage. The way the charcoal interacts with the newspaper is fascinating, and it really allows the textures to shine through.
For the second page, I mix it up a bit by adding blue acrylic paint and a few touches of water-soluble wax pastel to the newspaper background. This simple technique not only enhances the overall composition but also adds depth and interest to the piece. Throughout this tutorial, I emphasize the importance of focusing on simple techniques, as they help us build a solid foundation and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
In this tutorial, you’ll see how experimenting with different materials like newsprint, charcoal, and mixed media can lead to a deeper understanding of their qualities. This process allows for a more mindful and creative experience. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist, this simple abstract art technique is a great way to explore the potential of mixed media art while keeping the process enjoyable and stress-free.
