Diagnosing a torn Achilles tendon can be challenging, but there are some telltale signs, which include sudden and severe pain in the back of the ankle or calf, a popping or snapping sound at the time of injury, difficulty walking or standing on tiptoe, and swelling or bruising around the affected area.
Your podiatrist can assess for a torn Achilles tendon by squeezing your calf muscle on the back of your lower leg. Usually, your heel will move a little with your calf muscle because your Achilles tendon connects it to your heel bone (calcaneus). If your heel doesn't move, your Achilles tendon may be torn. Imaging studies such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may sometimes be needed to confirm the diagnosis definitively.
