This is the 19th of a series of virtual zoom panel discussions hosted by the America Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society in Los Angeles California, USA (ASPAS); Member of Photographic Society of America (PSA) and The International Federation of Photography of Art in France (FIAP). The objective of the series is to showcase the beauty of world fauna and flora and promote environmental conservation in the context of nature photography and tourism, with a special focus on the grandeur of Sri Lanka’s natural habitat.
This webinar will commemorate the United Nations World Oceans Day 2021, and celebrate the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the oceans by reminding us of the major role the oceans have in everyday life as the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe as well as a major source of food; and to recognize the impact of human actions on the ocean and explore the considerable challenges we face in maintaining their capacity to regulate the global climate, supply essential ecosystem services and provide sustainable livelihoods and safe recreation.
The danger we face is being well demonstrated before our own eyes by the fire burning in the ship off the coast of Sri Lanka spawning tons of garbage, plastic material, and dangerous chemicals and gases causing tremendous damage to the fish, corals, and the Island’s pristine coastline. It will not only affect the coastal communities and their livelihoods, but also adversely affect recreational areas causing the Island’s tourist trade, a primary source of its income. We have to find ways and means of mitigating the effects of such destructive events and eliminating our destructive practices leading to the pollution of the oceans before we succumb to their effects.
The children who are joining hands from around the world will voice their concerns and give their ideas to preserve our oceans for their generation which we adults are only the custodians. We have an excellent panel today to tell us about the richness of the oceans and the dangers caused by human activity. This webinar will be moderated by Mrs. Medini Ratnayake from USA.
Rashmi Perera is ten years old and is in grade 4. She studies at Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter School in Los Angeles. She is a Junior Park Ranger at Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona), Yosemite National Park, and Muir Woods National Monuments (California). Her passion is connecting children with nature which she believes is the ideal environment for children to explore. Her hobbies are visiting National Parks, Beaches, waterfalls, forests, participating in bird walks, and planting trees. She also likes to read books and practices Kandyan dancing.
Tiara Ganegama is 17 years old and is in Grade 12. She studies at Bishop’s College, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Tiara has many interests and currently she is the Vice-Captain Bishop’s College senior debating team. She enjoys public speaking and is a member of the Colombo Gavel Club, in Sri Lanka. She is also a member of the school Oriental Dance team, a member of the College Tennis team, Tiara is an active member of Wildlife and Nature protection Society Youth Wing, Sri Lanka and has obtained the PADI Open Water Diver License. She is currently Engages in youth awareness programs on environment protection and conservation.
Nischal Perera is eleven years old and is in grade 6. He studies at Ferndale Woods Elementary School in Ontario Canada. Nischal has had an interest in the environment from a young age. He has always enjoyed learning about habitats and the environment. Apart from his interest in science, he is also a huge Michael Jackson fan. His favorite pastime is dancing especially to Michael Jackson songs. He loves playing ice hockey, chess, and piano.
Nehansa Vethakan is 14 years old and is in grade 9. She goes to St Michaels Catholic Grammar School for girls in London. She is a cadet at St John’s Ambulance and a member of the Young Zoologists Club at the University of Cambridge. She is a cricketer and plays for North Middlesex Cricket Club in London. She is also a member of the choir at the St George’s Cathedral at Westminster, London. She is the vice president of Muthuhara Rupavahini Children’s Society- London and does Kandyan dancing. She is passionate about marine biology, phycology, and sociology. Her hobbies are playing sports, singing, and reading.
