Greetings friends and patrons, relax watch and learn. See Alabama history, established as a separate territory in 1817 and became a state in 1819. By 1820 Alabama's population was more than 125,000, including about 500 free Blacks. By 1830 there were 300,000 residents, nearly one-fifth of them enslaved, and cotton was the principal cash crop.Alabama Shipyard was originally known as Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. As one of the original nine emergency yards funded by the U.S. Maritime Commission during WWII, it became one of the largest employers in South Alabama while producing Liberty Ships and T-2 Tankers for the war effort.The museum is housed in the Old City Hall building, a national historic landmark, and has roots that date back nearly 180 years.
