Communal Culture
It′s easy to think that a country that has modernized through rapid economic growth, like Korea, would see its traditional
villages disintegrate and disappear just as quickly. But the culture of communal living typical to Koreans has resulted in the
preservation of traditional communities as well as the formation of new urban ones.
There are people who hold special ceremonies in a sacred forest twice a year to wish for the village′s prosperity and well-being.
Then there are those who still live in traditional hanoks in Museom Village, which has been home to only two clans since the
17th century.
A run-down urban slum in Seoul was transformed by its resident volunteers, and co-ops run by young people have opened
unique art markets to attract people, not money.
