Gus was born on May 26th, 1995. He just celebrated his 29th birthday from his hospital bed. Sadly, Gus passed away just over a week later, on June 8, 2024.
Gus's entry into the world wasn't without complications; I suffered placenta abruption and needed an emergency c-section to deliver him. He was a beautiful, healthy 7 pound 14 boy. At the age of 2, we did the old height thing, where you measure their height and triple it, which is how tall they should be in adult life. He was 2 ft 1, and surprisingly, he was at least 6 ft 3 or maybe 6 ft 4. His beautiful, infectious smile melted the hearts of everyone around him. His eyes were as blue as the sky, gorgeous. He was a bright boy in school, and teachers loved his eagerness to learn. He was more of an indoor type of child; he didn't like being outside much. Growing up He was fairly clumsy, tripping over his feet or always walking into things. In prep, we had his eyes tested as he seemed to struggle with reading. The specialist that assessed him made the discovery that he was partially blind in one eye. With the help of thick Coke bottle glasses and the aid of a game boy, his eye regained strength. He suffered most of his early childhood with ear infections; at 7 years old, he had his tonsils, adenoids, and grommets done, only to have his adenoids grow back, needing a second operation. He had a feeble seizure due to the high temperature and was rushed to the hospital when he was about 4 years old. Making a full recovery after yet another ear infection healed. He is my only child to have broken his arm while slipping off a trampoline. Him and trampolines were never a good mix. One day he was bouncing on a trampoline with the neighbour when he fell, getting his ear caught in the springs. The spring clamped his ear, making it hard to pull it back. We had to bounce for the spring to open. His ear was black and bruised. He was a good writer. He loved writing stories. He won a scholarship into high school for literacy. Gus did his schooling at a few schools as we moved and finally settled in Esk, where we have resided for almost 20 years now. Gus was a little different from many of his peers; he was his own person, a bit eccentric, soft, and friendly, which made him a target for bullies. He handled every situation like a super star, not giving the bullies or people who made fun of him the time of day. Gussy finished his schooling and went on to study events management at Tafe. Obtaining his RSA certificate. He volunteered at the local charity shop in town and even helped people out of his own pocket who called into the shop for funds for fuel. Gus has always been generous and had a gentle nature. In 2016, he volunteered at the Toogoolawah radio station as a radio presenter. He had an excellent, entertaining, easy-listening voice and the skill to interact socially. His passion for books led him to volunteer at the local library. Gus was very articulate, smart, and creative.
Forever Young!
