This talk focuses on four themes: Out, Open, Healing, Art. Exploring the complicated “outness” of escape but also living out and away from the mainstream (along with contrasting in-ness and in-between-ness that is felt by certain women working in the SW including indigenous women. Then the “openness” of the wide open places and spaces of the region but also the ability to do what one wants because of that isolation and openness. A kind of gender freedom that comes with the open. Then “healing” focuses on how artists like O’Keeffe, Elaine de Kooning, Nancy Holt, and Agnes Martin all found a kind of healing in the SW for their grief over husbands’ infidelity, death of a partner, and/or health struggles. And finally closed with how the art of women artists of the SW is excitingly place-based.
