Colleges and Universities Can Rediscover Its Purpose

We all have heard this story. A young person is working at a retail store. You can tell that it’s not their life choice to be working there. After they help you, you might do some chit-chat and learn they went to college for pre-med but because they are missing some required sciences classes, they can’t continue the program. They explain they need to finish the required classes and then re-apply to the competitive program. With no promises of getting a seat in the program a year goes by and they continue to accumulate student debt. Interest rates start to compound, and an evil hole starts to get deeper and deeper.
When a student enters a US college or university it is expected they will spend about four years to accumulate 120 credits and be eligible to graduate in their specific field. In this video, I will suggest three changes colleges and universities should implant to help their student graduate. The first issues with colleges and universities are they are more focused on their brand and how they look to the public.
number 1: It is cool if students can choose to take one semester or one class from any other accredited institution and build their program at their convinces and pace. It is nice if the student does not have to commit to one school for the completion of their degree. I am not saying it’s not possible now to do this but you will lose some of the credits when you transfer and depending on where you are transferring you lose a ton of money trying to catch up to lost credits.
Number 2: It is cool if the full catalog of courses was offered year around not only in the fall and spring. I know there are summer classes, but they are accelerated and from experience, they are not the best when learning new concepts. They are fine for simple math or English classes. The idea for year-round educational access is that some students could graduate in three years or less, in effect creating less debt. Another benefit would be students could jump into a program anytime and not waste a year waiting for a specific class that it only offers in the fall or spring.
Number 3: Colleges and universities should promote more scholarships and grants to their students. From experience, my school is the bare minimum to promote scholarships on their website or in seminars. I had to beg my guidance counselor to follow me with a list of scholarships I qualify for and even then. I had a hard time applying for them because the requirement was so confusing, I would just give up. When it came to applying for a loan it was a freeze.
