The Magnificent Seven
Patrice Rushen called them ‘The Magnificent Seven.” When beloved professor Ndugu Chancler passed away last year, Rushen was faced with replacing her friend and colleague for seven weeks of classes. She called seven legendary drummers, asking each to fill in for one week.
They all said YES. The drummers included Vinnie Colaiuta, Sonny Emory, James Gadson, Harvey Mason, Bernard Purdie, John Robinson, and Will Kennedy, who has been hired to carry on Ndugu’s legacy of teaching at USC Thornton. ✌️
