On July 22, 1998, River Plate hosted Vasco da Gama for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final. After a 1-0 home victory in the first leg, the Brazilians arrived at the Monumental Stadium confident of securing their place in the final. But River Plate scored the first goal of the match in the 25th minute through Juan Pablo Sorin, a player Paris Saint-Germain fans will surely recognize, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1.
In the dying moments of the match, with ten minutes remaining, Vasco were awarded a free-kick more than 30 meters out, one of their last chances to seal the victory. Number 19 calmly placed the ball in the desired spot, took a deep breath, and unleashed a shot into the top corner, sending Vasco da Gama through to the final.
His name is Juninho Pernambucano.
