In April 2018, the European Football Observatory published its weekly newsletter and it is absolutely... terrible. According to calculations made by the research centre, 29% of Champions League matches end with at least a three-goal gap, an exceptionally high figure that highlights a clear observation: the competitive balance of European football is in danger. Ahead of the big debut of the new Champions League tomorrow evening, and its expansion to 36 clubs, I thought it rather interesting to put a little economic and sporting context back on the Old Continent's most prized competition... ❌
