I've always loved the early Freddie King sides. As a young guy starting out learning how to play blues guitar I learned all his instrumentals and wore out a few copies of the 'Hideaway' LP. Now it's kind of my starting point for teaching classic electric blues lead guitar.
Here's my fave of 'em all - just as I can remember it - one take, 'live' with my homemade backing track (ha ha excuse that folks) but I think it's pretty close to the original band feel. My piano playing ain't much to write home about, tho', ha ha, eh, Al Norman? Oh, and excuse the ending.... buggered if I could remember how Mr. King ended it so it went a bit sideways LOL... it's not quite note-for-note but I hope it captures some of the spirit of the great Freddie King's style. Yes, I know he played with a thumb pick and one finger-pick.... but I think I've managed to get his sound and feel down pretty well with a flat pick. I can play with bare fingers but I think it needs a plectrum (or plectra) of some kind to nail the sound.
Hopefully you can see and hear the diff. between this and what the UK guitarists who famously covered it did with it. Of course they're all good, but I gotta say I personally prefer Freddie's approach. Go check out the myriad versions of 'The Stumble' here on youtube and judge for yourselves.
