The emerald ash borer has killed millions of trees across the country, and now the invasive beetle is killing ash trees in Oregon. This week, crews are removing dozens of infested trees in Cornelius. Experts say there’s no hope of stopping the invasion that was first discovered in Oregon in 2022.
“We know we’re not going to eradicate it,” said Jim Gersbach with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Instead, state agencies are trying to slow the spread of this tree-killing insect by cutting down the infested ash trees and treating healthy ash trees nearby with pesticides.

The infested trees get brittle as they die and become a fall risk. That means on some streets, a lot of trees need to be cut down and replaced with a different species.

Officials have surveyed more than 6,500 trees near Forest Grove, where the infestation was first discovered. They’ve identified 190 infested trees that will need to be removed and replaced.
