Thank you to Michael Worsham for asking this question. I sometimes forget that the terms I know aren't universal juggling terms for everyone.
In this video I address the question of "What is the difference between a flash and a throw?" with juggling. In its most simple form, a throw is any time the ball gets thrown up into the air. With a "flash", it's a bit different.
A flash with juggling is when you are juggling a set number (5 balls in this example) and you throw each of the 5 balls at least once. The idea here is to make sure that each throw goes to the correct spot to make sure that you are learning the pattern correctly.
As you might know, the throw is the most important thing with juggling. With a bad throw, the whole pattern gets messed up. That means taking the time to get good at the throw allows you to learn easier.
So for a 5 ball "flash", it's simply throwing every one of the 5 balls up into the air, hitting the ideal spot for your throw and then catching the balls after. Although when you are learning, you don't even need to catch each of the throws. Just getting comfortable with hitting those targets you are aiming for will make you a better juggler.
