VIDEO INFO: A memorable gem that transcends the slightly flat and absurd ‘2006 UK Music Hall of Fame’ ceremony at London’s Alexandra Palace, broadcast by both Channel 4 and VH1 as part of a short-lived attempt to produce a home-grown equivalent of America’s annual showpiece.
As a vehicle for cultural soft power, however, the event was scarcely on a par with the Brit Awards, let alone BAFTA, even though that year alone it secured the attendance of inductees such as Bon Jovi, James Brown, Rod Stewart, Brian Wilson, Prince, Led Zeppelin and George Martin!
You can’t fail to spot some of those luminaries sprinkled among the almost catatonic celebrity audience through which Joss Stone seductively tramples, barefoot and wearing little more than a baby-blue negligee, as she belts out her goose-pimpling rendition of ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ by Dusty Springfield (who was also being inducted posthumously).
It’s hard to say if the star-studded audience are subdued, intimidated or contemptuous, though Trevor Nelson at least displays his effortless class and humility when he is briefly used as a prop. What is less apparent from this footage, however, is that the ‘ordinary’ members of the public, gathered out of shot in standing-room-only cattle class at the rear of the building, clearly felt her performance had blown the roof off – and their fitting response blew the bloody doors off.
