To identify the direct and indirect object pronouns use these guidelines:
The Direct Object (DO) can be a person, a thing or a place that receives the action of the verb. The DO answers the question “what” or “who” with regards to the verb. The Indirect Object (IO) answers the questions “to whom?” or “for whom” the action of the verb is performed. The IO tells us where the DO is going. For example: I write a letter for my mother. Le escribo una carta a mi mamá. What do I write? A letter (DO) For whom? For my mother (IO)
INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS (IO)
me (to me, for me)
te (to you, for you – familiar)
le (to you, for you-formal)
le (to/for him, to her, to it)
nos (to us, for us)
os (to you-all-familiar in Spain)
les (to you-all, for you all)
les (to them, for them)
When you have a direct object and an indirect object in the same sentence-idea-apply the RID rule (Reflexive, Indirect, Direct) to replace your direct and indirect objects with pronouns.
Object pronouns always stay together, before the conjugated verb when you have one verb or before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive or gerund when you have two verbs.
Por ejemplo:
Indirect, Direct: “Te lo quiero comprar.” or “Quiero comprártelo.” (I want to buy it for you)
Indirect, Direct : “Te lo estoy comprando.” or “Estoy comprándotelo” (I am buying it for you.)
Apply the LALA rule: When you have two pronouns that start with “L”, the first pronoun becomes “se”.
“Le” or “les” can become “se”. Add a prepositional phrase if it’s necessary to clarify “se”.
Por ejemplo:
Se lo quiero comprar a ella. or Quiero comprárselo a ella. (I want to buy it for her)
Se lo quiero comprar a ellos. or Quiero comprárselo a ellos. (I want to buy it for them).
