Kazakhs (Kazakh: қазақтар /qɑzɑqtɑr/; sing. қазақ /qɑzɑq/) are a Turkic people, the inhabitants and main population of Kazakhstan. They also live in regions adjacent to Kazakhstan in China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan. They are the second largest ethnic group in Mongolia, the third largest in Uzbekistan, and the fourth largest in Turkmenistan. Anthropologically, Kazakhs belong to the South Siberian race, a transitional group between the Mongoloid and Caucasoid major races. Their language is Kazakh, which is part of the Kipchak-Nogai subgroup of the Kipchak group of Turkic languages. Russian and other languages are also widely spoken. The Kazakh ethnic group emerged in the 15th century after the unification of Turkic and Mongol tribes.
