Remembering Tom Kettle

As the Decade of Centenaries draws to a close, and Ireland's forgotten soldiers are once again permitted to disappear from the official historical narrative, it again becomes important to cherish their memory and value their sacrifice. Tom Kettle was one of that number. He died leading his men on the 71st day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He has no known grave. As national memory continues to fade, his life, death and contribution to the political evolution of this country should never be forgotten.
Dr Brendan O'Shea is a member of the Western Front Association. He is also a published author and was a regular contributor to the Irish Times Decade of Centenaries publications focusing on the exploits of the 16th Irish Division and the life and times of both Major Willie Redmond and Lieutenant Tom Kettle.
