Sarah Tan's application to B&T 30 Under 30 Awards 2024 under the Tech category.

My achievements and career path
Hi my name is Sarah Tan, I am a Product Designer at Atlassian and AR/VR Innovator.

I’m a:
Global Top 100 Women of the Future in Emerging Tech by Women of the Future
Rising Star of the Year Finalist by Women in Digital
One of 13 women reshaping the Australian business landscape by Smart Company

I started my career at Google as a designer where I found my love for UX design and AR/VR. Since then I’ve worked on projects for some of the world’s biggest companies such as Facebook, Adobe, Amazon, NASA, and Australia’s biggest brands such as CommBank and REA Group.

My significant contributions
I have created an AR experience to help people navigate public transport called OpalAR, it went viral, featured on 7NEWS and numerous articles. Even got a minister’s seal of approval.

I also contributed to a Design textbook published by Bloomsbury on UX/UI and AR/VR principles.

What makes me a future leader?
I push boundaries of emerging technologies by developing AR/VR solutions that have real customer impact, such as innovation in various industries like travel, real estate, legal, and more. My work helped push more innovation in this space.

I speak at events and conferences nationally and internationally about UX/UI design, AR/VR innovation and the future of tech.

What needs to be improved in my industry?
I moved to Australia as an immigrant and experienced biases and stereotypes while building my career. The fact is immigrants don’t get equal opportunities despite being equally intelligent and skilled. It is important to have diversity in tech because diverse backgrounds helps unleash innovation. I am passionate in increasing diverse talent in tech. I’ve helped

Build an AI chat bot to help women report racism
Run design thinking workshops for migrant start up founders
mentor migrants to successfully get jobs in tech.

Speaking of innovation, I think there should be more innovative and practical applications of AR/VR and creating UX/UI to make people feel more comfortable with emerging tech.
