Armageddon Chess Match - The Flash vs. Despero
This chess board spotlights the CW Arrowverse heroes The Flash (white king), Batwoman (the white rook), Black Lightning (the white bishop), The Atom (the white knight), and Mia Queen / Arrow (the white queen) as they face off against Despero (the black king) , Damien Darhk (the black bishop), and Reverse Flash (the black queen). The animation was inspired by the comic Justice League of America (Vol.1, No.1, November 1960) that features a rigged chess game between The Flash and Despero. As the chess pieces are lost, the superheroes are scattered through space to fight other challenges. Despero's purple beam was influenced by the Justice League animated episode "Hearts and Mind".
The chessboard setup is based on the 1955 match between Paul Keres and Lazlo Szabo (move 18).
I used Cinema 4D for the 3D Voronoi fracture animations. I even had to adjust the collision and gravity physics to get the right effect. I imported the models into After Effects via Element 3D and used a few other plug-ins (Saber, Optical Flares, and Trapcode Particular).
