A recently retired English professor who accepts to recover in the home of her son, a police investigator, after being the victim of a mugging finds herself at a crossroads. Harry begins to meddle in the inquiry into her son's death once he moves in with him after spotting similarities to an obscure play. Fergus Reid, her mugger, crosses her path; instead of reporting him, Harry enlists him as her sidekick and the two of them start out to find the murderer.
