Tchaikovsky and the Moscow Consevatory
The Queen of Spades is an opera by the Russian composer Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky and his brother and co-librettist Modest Tchaikovsky.
Premiering in 1890 in St Petersburg, Russia, the opera is inspired by a short story of the same name by one of Tchaikovsky’s favourite authors, Alexander Pushkin. Tchaikovsky composed the entire score for the opera in just 44 days whilst working in Florence, Italy; it is an opera in three acts with seven scenes.
