Paul C zanne’s art grew out of Impressionism and challenged the conventional values of painting in the 19th century. He insisted on personal expression and the integrity of the painting itself, regardless of subject matter. C zanne tried to reveal the inner geometry of nature in his work, or as he expressed: "to make of Impressionism something solid and durable". C zanne’s intellectual approach to formal issues, particularly his spatial explorations, laid the foundation for Picasso and other artists’ subsequent explorations with Cubism, while his investigations of color and brushstroke influenced Matisse and other Fauve artists in the first decade of the century. Although misunderstood and discredited during most of his life, over the years the public and critics embraced his work. Picasso offered perhaps the most truthful description of C zanne’s role for subsequent generations of artists, declaring that he was the father of us all . Seated Peasant is one of several paintings by C zanne of peasants who worked on the C zanne family estate known as Le Jas de Bouffan. The tone and color is similar to his famous series of paintings showing men playing cards. The unknown peasant probably sits in the kitchen of Jas de Bouffan. His hat is pushed back on his head and his suit has been painted in grey and brown tones. Cezanne gives him a calm, solid pose, devoid of any gesture or expression, which lends him a certain solemnity.
