In an exciting announcement during Marvel Studios' blockbuster panel at San Diego Comic-Con, president Kevin Feige revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo are set to direct two upcoming films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr., famously known for his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in ten Marvel films, will return in a new role, portraying the iconic villain Victor von Doom.
The Russo brothers, who previously directed four Marvel Studios hits—Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame—took the stage to thunderous applause. They expressed their enthusiasm for directing Secret Wars, describing it as “the biggest story that Marvel Comics ever told” and the reason they first “fell in love with comics.”
The Russos also hinted at the crucial role of Doctor Doom in Secret Wars. To the crowd's delight, a group of figures in green cloaks and Doom masks appeared on stage, with one stepping forward to unveil himself and it was none other than Robert Downey Jr. The Hall H audience erupted in cheers, chanting "RDJ!"
“New mask, same task,” Downey quipped. “What can I tell you? I like playing complicated characters.”.
