Worthaus Pop-Up – Waldkappel: December 31, 2017 by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Dietz
On July 20, 1944, Adolf Hitler survived an assassination attempt with minor injuries. That same evening, he spoke again on the radio. He thanked God for his protective care and described his survival as proof that Providence still had much in store for him. Millions of Christians thanked God for this deliverance. Some Christians were involved in the assassination attempt and were executed for it shortly before the end of the war. Among them was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In prison, he reflected on what was happening in the world—including the Christian world—and left behind some notes. How does one convey faith in God in a world where dictators thank God for their salvation? How does one convey this faith to people who increasingly consider religion unimportant? Whose big questions about life—Where do we come from? Where are we going?—are increasingly being answered by science? When people come of age and are no longer subservient to the church, can they still believe in God? They can, Bonhoeffer believed. But for that to happen, God, faith, and Christianity must be completely rethought, and the biblical message must be taken seriously once again.
