This is an overview of the CODA trial and my thoughts on whether the use of antibiotic first strategy can be an appropriate option for patients with an acute uncomplicated appendicitis.

Why did I decide on this trial? Although it is the standard treatment for pts to undergo appendectomy for pts w/ appendicitis in the united states, the CODA trial (done in the US) may lead
more clinicians in the US to allow patients to consider both options of either an appendectomy or an antibiotic regimen if they are appropriate candidates for those options.
I believe pharmacists will want to be aware of what antibiotics are ideal for patients opting to choose the antibiotic route, so I will mention the current IDSA standard abx regimen
that the CODA trial used for their abx group.
