Chemotherapy and Nerve Problems: New Training Methods Offer Hope!

This video is for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with oxaliplatin or vinca alkaloids who are concerned about nerve problems (polyneuropathy).

*What is CIPN?*

CIPN stands for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, which refers to peripheral nerve problems that can result from chemotherapy. These problems can manifest as numbness, tingling, burning, or pain in the hands and feet and can significantly impact quality of life.

*Is there help available?*

This study shows for the first time that two specific training methods show promise in reducing the incidence of CIPN:

Sensorimotor Training (SMT): Exercises that improve coordination, balance, and proprioception.

Whole-body vibration training (WBV): Training on a special vibration plate designed to stimulate blood flow and muscle function.

*The Study*

This study followed over 150 patients undergoing chemotherapy. In addition to their standard treatment plan, one in three patients received either sensorimotor training, whole-body vibration training, or no additional treatment.

*The Results*

Those who participated in the additional training developed significantly fewer nerve problems than the control group, which did not receive any additional training. Patients receiving vinca alkaloids, in particular, benefited greatly from sensorimotor training. Fewer patients died in the WBV group.

*What does this mean for you?*

Talk to your doctor about this study and the possibility of additional training to reduce your risk of nerve problems.

*Important!*

This study is an important first step, but further research is needed.
