Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias. The atria contract irregularly and rapidly. This can lead to various symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, or dizziness. But what are the causes of this condition and how is it diagnosed?
Causes of atrial fibrillation
The causes of atrial fibrillation are diverse and often complex. Often, several factors play a role. The most common include:
• Cardiovascular diseases: High blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart valve defects, and heart failure increase the risk.
• Metabolic diseases: Diabetes mellitus and thyroid diseases can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation.
• Lung diseases: Chronic lung diseases such as COPD can put a strain on the heart.
• Age-related changes: The risk of atrial fibrillation increases with age.
• Lifestyle factors: Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and obesity can also play a role.
• Genetic factors: A family history increases the risk.
Diagnosis of atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is usually diagnosed through a combination of different tests:
• Electrocardiogram (ECG): The ECG records the electrical activity of the heart and shows typical changes in atrial fibrillation.
• Holter ECG: A holter ECG over several days makes it possible to detect even irregular episodes of atrial fibrillation.
• Smartwatches: e.g., Apple Watch
