Jonker Street was named after the Dutch word for "young nobleman" — this was millionaire's row back in the 1600s when Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese merchants all lived here. Today it sits at the heart of Melaka's Chinatown and the food reflects every culture that ever passed through this port city.
This video covers the full night market experience including food stalls, souvenir shopping, live performances, and the atmosphere after 9pm when the crowd peaks.
Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Melaka shuts down Jalan Hang Jebat and transforms it into one of Southeast Asia's most packed night markets. Over 450 stalls line half a kilometre of road inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's been protected since 2008.
In this walking tour I start from the Melaka River entrance and walk the entire stretch — trying street food, passing through heritage shophouses, and showing you what this 400-year-old street looks like after dark.
