Around 140 B.C., this was the home of the Cilician pirates who had long terrorized the Mediterranean Sea.
Fighting the pirates was not easy, so the Romans, faced with their invasion in 65 BC, asked the Roman Senate to send troops to fight them.
In 67 BC, the Roman Senate armed the Roman commander Pompey with a fleet of 120,000 soldiers, who spent almost two months clearing the entire "mare nostrum" of pirates. After conquering the city, Pompey annexed it to the Roman Empire.
In 44, Mark Antony, who reigned after the death of Julius Caesar, married the Egyptian queen Cleopatra and gave her Choragesium and the entire area. The queen, according to legend, transformed the area and made it her favorite place for recreation. One of the most beautiful beaches is even named after her. Thus began the Egyptian period.
During the subsequent Byzantine period, the fortress was greatly expanded and fortified to protect Kalonoros, as it was then called, from Arab raids.
Under Byzantine rule, the city existed until the Seljuks came here in the 13th century. In 1221, the Seljuk sultan Ala-ad-din Key-Kubad expelled the Byzantines and captured the city, renaming it "Alaye", which eventually changed to "Alanya", the name that has survived to this day.
