California lawmakers have advanced a controversial bill allowing illegal immigrants to apply for homebuyer assistance through the "California Dream for All" program, offering up to $150,000 in loans. Critics argue this policy further burdens the state’s already strained budget, currently facing a $60-70 billion deficit. The bill, AB 1840, passed the state senate and now awaits final approval before heading to Governor Gavin Newsom, who is expected to sign it. Opponents highlight the unfairness of allowing non-citizens to compete with U.S. citizens for limited housing resources, particularly in a state with a severe housing shortage and affordability crisis. This legislation, they argue, prioritizes illegal immigrants over veterans and legal residents, exacerbating California’s financial and social challenges.
