Höcke and his backers | WDR documentary
"Höcke, Höcke, Höcke..." echoes through Björn Höcke's campaign rallies. Some claim he's his own biggest fan. Former AfD federal chairman Jörg Meuthen describes him this way: "I believe he's living under the illusion that something truly great is destined for him, something he must realize, and for which he needs patience until his moment arrives."
First, Björn Höcke wants to win the Thuringian state election on September 1st and become its Minister-President. Höcke was recently fined twice for using the SA slogan "Everything for Germany." He has appealed the verdicts. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the Thuringian AfD state association, which he leads, as "proven right-wing extremist."
What can be expected from Björn Höcke in the future? What is his true strategy? In his book, he says of Germany: "A few corrections and minor reforms won't be enough. But German uncompromisingness will guarantee that we tackle the matter thoroughly and fundamentally. Once the turning point arrives, we Germans don't do things by halves." So, is Björn Höcke a system breaker? Should Germany be afraid of him?
Reporters from WDR and NDR investigate for this story: Who is Björn Höcke, really? Where do his beliefs, his image of Germany, and his worldview come from? And: Is Höcke behind Höcke, or is he the figurehead of a much larger movement? Is he being controlled, or is he controlling the AfD? And: Where is he headed?
