Firefighters evacuate Essonne residents amid floods in France

French firefighters evacuated some households in the Essonne department, near Paris, the night of Thursday to Friday (October 10-11) as the remnants of Hurricane Kirk churned across western Europe, drenching parts of France.
The nearby Seine-et-Marne and Eure-et-Loir departments were also submerged overnight. Both remained on red alert for flooding with peaks expected to be reached throughout Friday, according to weather service Meteo France.
French authorities had warned the public of a high risk of flooding in more than 30 areas.
Meteo France had warned of gusts hitting 75-93 mph (120-150 kph) high in the Pyrenees mountains and up to 90 mm (3.5 inches) of rain falling in the southern Picardie and greater Paris regions, where the saturated ground meant there was a risk of flooding.
