Western Cuba faces flooding as Milton departs

Hurricane Milton swept through western Cuba on Wednesday (October 9), leaving flooded streets and homes in its wake before heading toward Florida.
Residents in the coastal town of Surgidero de Batabano, located on the western Caribbean Island, were seen on Wednesday (October 9) assessing the damage to their properties.
In Havana, strong swells were recorded on Wednesday morning.
Hurricane Milton escalated from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane, the most powerful category, in less than 24 hours, fueled by the warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. It was later downgraded to a Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (241 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center's advisory.
The hurricane is expected to remain extremely dangerous after making landfall in Florida on Wednesday, with predictions of catastrophic damage and power outages expected to last for days.
