Two-time IndyCar champion in 1997/98, Alessandro Leone Zanardi, or Alex Zanardi, celebrated his 58th birthday last Wednesday, the 23rd.

The channel @AMilPorHoraComRodrigoMattar takes the opportunity to honor the legendary Italian driver, who twice rose to prominence and gave us examples of overcoming adversity and tenacity, by featuring in "Minis with History" a car that perhaps even Zanardi himself didn't like: the 1999 Williams FW21.

With a project led by Patrick Head and Gavin Fisher, plus a group of technicians and aerodynamicists, the FW21 was the team's second car after Adrian Newey left for McLaren. It scored more points than its predecessor from 1998, but the team's campaign only managed three podium finishes in 1999 – Williams would be surpassed by Ferrari, McLaren and, surprisingly, Jordan and Stewart.

This model had a Supertec engine (the old Renault RS9) V10 at 71º with 780 hp and 15,800 rpm, with a six-speed Williams/X-Trac gearbox and grooved Bridgestone tires.

Zanardi's biggest challenge in his return five years after driving for Lotus – and considering that 1999 was his only full season in F1 – was handling the car and managing the tires. Alex was certainly the driver who suffered the most, because in addition to the grooves, the tires were narrower than those used in IndyCar, reducing the contact area with the ground and, logically, representing a loss of mechanical grip. His best result was 7th place – in a Formula 1 where only six drivers scored points, it was insufficient to help the team. At the end of the year, Williams and Zanardi parted ways, Jenson Button replaced the Italian, Zanardi returned to the USA, and the rest is history.
