After years of suffering with cancer, Patricia Cairo, better known as "Pat", was not responding to cancer treatment therapies anymore. The Cairo family was referred to send Pat to Calvary Hospital to be made comfortable. For two weeks, the family was so moved by the quality of care their mother received they wanted to give back in her memory.

In 1995, Joe Cairo created the Pat Cairo Family Foundation, to help aid those struggling with cancer. Since its inception, their efforts have benefited Calvary's development by renovating and renaming the third floor south wing, "Patricia A Cairo Hall", and have advocated end-of-life care access to those who need it by signing the "End of Life Care Bill", a bill that was enacted to ensure quality end of life care for thousands of terminally ill cancer patients.

Since the Bill’s passage, hundreds of cancer patients who otherwise would have been denied coverage for admission and treatment at Calvary, have spent their final days being cared for by Calvary.

In 2021, The Pat Cairo Family Foundation was awarded the Spirit of Family Award at the Calvary Hospital Awards Gala, for their outstanding commitment to our mission and legacy of giving.
