The science of reading is a complex and nuanced concept comprising decades of research. The United States has ranked middle-of-the-pack in literacy for many years compared to other global powers, and massive gaps remain between what the science tells us and how reading is still being taught throughout the country.

In this interview, we follow DaNadia’s journey through the lens of the science of reading to provide some insights into how our teachers are being equipped, what’s happening when they actually get into the classroom, and how things are different now that DaNadia is responsible for designing curriculum used by over a million students throughout the country.

DaNadia Johnson is a career educator with experience in traditional public, private, and charter school settings. She is currently a mission-driven learning designer with eSpark and an avid reader.
