Should I Get An Amazon Parrot
Amazon Means Big
Amazons, historically, were large, warrior women so the name sounds big and that's appropriate.
Amazon parrots may not be the largest of parrots, but their personalities are pronounced and they are among the loudest parrots! Fortunately, they channel some of their voice into talking and singing! There are said to be over 350 species in the Amazon family-- and a new one was recently identified in the Mexican Yucatan just a couple years ago-- perhaps this is what makes them one of the most iconic parrots. Each family of parrots has it's own characteristics, but Amazons have one of my favorite characteristics too.
One Amazonic Limitation
We have three Amazons, a Yellow-naped, a Mexican Red-head and an Orange-winged. Each species is a different size and color, but all Amazons have one limitation in common. They must eat a low-fat diet. Unlike Macaws or African Greys, who require nuts in their diet, Amazon parrots are prone to gaining weight, which can lead to Fatty Liver Disease-- a leading cause of illness in parrots as per some expert sites.
Unfortunately, I find this to be true with my Amazons. Parrots are an amazing class of birds. There is an endearing image of feeding seeds or nuts to your pet parrot, and if you get an Amazon, you won't get to do this. You can, however, feed them carrots. That's what we do, carrots and beet chips.
