"What Have You Done For Me Lately" is a song by Janet Jackson, included on her third album "Control" (1986). Janet co-wrote the song along with Jam and Lewis. Released on January 13, 1986 by "A&M Records" as the album's first single, it was originally written for Jam and Lewis' own musical, but the lyrics were changed to convey Janet's feelings about her separation from James DeBarge in January 1985, thus reflecting the frustration of a woman with her partner in a relationship. Singer-songwriter Prince began performing it live during his "Parade: 1986" tour, stopping in the middle of the song and asking the audience: "Who wrote this?", suggesting that he had written it himself. Prince repeated the same question on his "Nude: 1990" tour and during his last concerts in 2015. There was a dispute over the authorship of the song, Prince believed that Jam and Lewis used an "old demo" that they had made with him before he fired them from "The Time". La Toya Jackson sampled the song in "Wild Side" from her album "No Relations" (1991).
