Beirut Port's Explosion - August 2020: The Two Shockwaves That Destroyed And Saved A City
Due to the abysmal handling of this terrible attack against the Lebanese people, both in terms of the aftermath emergency responses and the investigation I thought I’d talk about Beirut’s explosion, especially since I was about 1.74 km from the blast zone, and surviving the shockwaves from the blast was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. And that’s what we’re going to talk about today; we’re going to analyze the shockwaves in this new series about Unearthing Lebanon in hopes that people can visualize or better understand what hundreds of thousands of people experienced that day.I dedicate this video to all those affected and for everything and everyone they lost on that day.

The computational fluid dynamics blast study of the 2,750-tonne ammonium nitrate explosion shows the blast wave unfolding around the harbor asymmetrically.
The video, produced by Will Wholey, Ian Bruce, and Julia Abboud from engineering firm Arup and Christopher Stirling, the developer of the simulation program Viper::Blast, demonstrates how the explosion emanated east and south of the epicenter. It hit Beirut’s port district with the force of a magnitude 3.3 earthquake, killing at least 154 people and injuring about 5,000 others, 300,000 were also displaced.
