I Will Lift Mine Eyes was commissioned by the Atascadero United Methodist Church, California. It written as a gift to AUMC's pastors, a dearly beloved couple, who were leaving to accept a call at another church after years of fruitful service in Atascadero.
As the church was set amidst the rolling hills in California's Central Coast, I was drawn to the text of Psalm 121. The second half of the psalm text served as a blessing for the pastors and their journeys ahead: "The Lord shall preserve the from all evil; He shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and forevermore."
I had the great privilege to serve as Conductor and Artistic Director of the Phoenix Chamber Choir from 2012-2018. To learn more about this wonderful ensemble, please visit their website: www.phoenixchoir.ca.
I WILL LIFT MINE EYES
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
He that keepeth Israel shall not slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
