The hippopotamus, or "hippo," is a massive, semi-aquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. Known for their aggressive and territorial nature, hippos spend much of their time in rivers, lakes, and swamps to stay cool. Weighing between 3,000 to 4,000 pounds, these herbivores graze on grass at night and possess powerful jaws with 20-inch-long teeth. Hippos live in groups called pods, secrete a natural sunscreen called "blood sweat," and communicate through various vocalizations. Despite their size, they are fast and dangerous, causing more human fatalities in Africa than most other animals.
