The Biggest Upgrades for the Spanish GP
Spanish GP is one of the most familiar race tracks to F1 drivers. However, drivers don’t want to rely on the familiarity of the tracks to win but want to use the expected upgrades on their vehicles to claim victory.
Car problems for Red Bull and Ferrari plagued last year's Spanish Grand Prix. However, they finished 1st and 2nd respectively. Although both teams expect similar performance on the podium, they plan significant upgrades to many cars on the grid. But it is not just Red Bull and Ferrari that promised upgrades; Aston Martin and other teams want to do the same in the upcoming race.
The great intrigue heading to Barcelona is how Mercedes’ upgrades to their W14 will really perform. The upgrade was initially planned for the canceled Emilia Romagna GP; Mercedes debuted their recent bodywork, floor and front suspension in Monaco. However, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell ended the race in 4th and 5th position, respectively.
While their positions don't give fans much to expect from the upcoming race, the unique nature of the street circuit in Monte Carlo makes it difficult to assess the true performance of the upgrades. But Hamilton, Russell and team boss Toto Wolff felt there were immediate positive signs from the updated W14 and will seek to substantiate its real potential this weekend.
