The "real" Downton Abbey
The opulent grandeur of Highclere Castle, the picturesque English countryside, and the relationships between the aristocratic Crawley family and their loyal servants - these are just a few of the elements that make up the beloved television series Downton Abbey created by Julian Fellowes. The show has captivated audiences worldwide with its portrayal of the lives of the British upper class in the early 20th century. But while Downton Abbey is a work of fiction, its inspiration is rooted in a very real place: Highclere Castle, the historic estate of Lord and Lady Carnarvon, who have been the direct descendants of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who owned Highclere Castle in the early 20th century.
