The interference of light is a phenomenon that occurs when two or more light waves superpose or overlap with each other. It results in the redistribution of the energy of the waves, leading to various patterns of constructive and destructive interference.
Interference can be observed when light waves from coherent sources, such as lasers or certain types of lamps, interfere with each other. Coherent sources produce waves with a constant phase relationship, meaning the crests and troughs of the waves are aligned.
There are two main types of interference: constructive interference and destructive interference.
1. Constructive Interference: Constructive interference occurs when the crests of two waves coincide, resulting in a wave with an increased amplitude. When two waves are in phase (i.e., their crests and troughs align), their amplitudes add up, leading to a brighter region in the interference pattern. This reinforcement of the waves leads to constructive interference.
2. Destructive Interference: Destructive interference occurs when the crest of one wave aligns with the trough of another wave, resulting in cancellation or reduction of the wave's amplitude. When two waves are out of phase (i.e., their crests and troughs are misaligned), their amplitudes subtract from each other, leading to a darker region in the interference pattern. This cancellation of the waves leads to destructive interference.
