Refraction:
Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another medium of different optical density. It occurs due to the change in the speed of light when it crosses the boundary between two media. The basic principle of refraction is governed by Snell's law, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is constant for a given pair of media. Mathematically, Snell's law is given by:
n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂
Total Internal Reflection (TIR):
Total internal reflection is a phenomenon that occurs when light passes from a denser medium to a rarer medium and the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle. In such a case, instead of refracting, all the incident light is reflected back into the denser medium. This phenomenon can only occur when light travels from a medium with a higher refractive index to a medium with a lower refractive index.
The critical angle (θ_c) is the angle of incidence at which the angle of refraction becomes 90 degrees. It can be calculated using the formula:
θ_c = sin^(-1)(n₂/n₁)
