He is a sundance leader. The Sundance is a lakota traditional ceremony. It was outlawed for years. The dancer prepares by fasting, praying and going to sweats. They then will dance and may pierce. Piercing is when the medicine man pierces each person with sticks though their chest or back or in women their arms. They will dance around the tree and fall and the skin will be torn off and sacrificed. A flesh offering is the ultimate sacrifice. A sundancer is highly respected in our community.
He has written several books:
Mitakuye Oyasin - We are All Related, (1990).
Conversational Lakota (1991).
Ehanamani - "Walks Among" autobiography (1992).
Keeper of the Female Medicine Bundle a biography of Wihopa (Agnes Ross)(Feb. 1998)
Crazy Horse and The Real Reason for the Battle of Little Big Horn (Mar. 2000)
Dr Allen Ross was born in Pipestone, Minnesota, on October 25, 1940. He is a member of the Mdewakantonwan Tribe, one of the original seven tribes of the Dakota Nation (Sioux). His early years were spent on the Flandreau, Rosebud, and Pine Ridge Reservations in South Dakota. Also known as Ehanamani or "walks among." Mitakuye Oyasin is Lakota Sioux for "All My Relations." It is a prayer of oneness and harmony with all forms of life: other people, animals, birds, insects, trees and plants, and even rocks. It reminds us that we are connected to these other aspects of Creation, that we share a common kinship in the Hoop of Life.
