The tune "Hup Cossack" has its origins in a story from Chassidic tradition.  It is attributed to the renowned Tzadik known as the Shpoler Zeide. According to the story, the nobles in old Russia and Ukraine used to make sport of the Jews by dressing them in bearskins and forcing them to dance with a Cossack. If the Jew failed to keep step with the tune, he would suffer lashes with the whip.

Once, a Jew who had rented an estate from the noble was imprisoned for failing to pay his rent on time. When his turn came to dance in the bearskin, the Shpoler Zeide managed to take his place and perform the dance for him. The Zeide's successful dance culminated in the cry: "Hup Cossack!"
The melody is meant to express this incident and is often sung on joyous occasions, such as Simchat Torah.
