The lower the number the bigger a round the wire. With a thicker gauge wire, you have more contacts giving a higher possibility your full wattage will get to where it's going with little to no loss. That means that the lower the speaker wire gauge the further you can run the speaker cable from your power source.
Commercial audio speaker wire is unlike the wire that you'd have in a home, which is called solid core wire with a solid copper conductor.
